I am not sure if they can take over your PC through your router, but they can take over your router, and in that manner fool your PC to think it is going to certain websites, like your bank or paypal.
It can also log on to your router and use your resources surfing the web or posting nasty messages with your IP etc.
I suggest setting a password on as it is safer for your resources.
