Default Can an ISP know our browsing activity ?

When I first started using cable internet, I was warned by a friend to protect my browsing and internet activities from my new ISP.I know that an ISP can monitor all the websites I visit and probably all my internet transactions too.

By using a proxy service or an anonymizing software we can protect ourselves from hackers , but can my ISP still track my internet activities if I am using an anonymizing software ?

I would think that it would depend on the age of the software. Software is outdated every few month's. If your ISP is working on new software to counteract the IP altering software, then you have to find better software. However, unless youare doing something your ISP won't like then I wouldn't worry about it. On the other hand, if you are causing all kinds of trouble on the web, no software will help you!!! They will be able to find your IP address easier than you think!!

I think your ISP does track your browsing activity, but they keep it on hand for the government. That's just incase you do something wrong, the police give your ISP your IP, and they can take a look at the logs to see what you were doing that day.

After a friend had $600 from his e-gold account hacked,I started using metropipe tunneler ,which is an anonymizing software .My ISP didn't complain, but some payment processors seemed to have problem with the software because it has a finite set of IP addresses and when using the software ,it assigns the same IP addresses to several computers. This makes it difficult for the payment processors to track the IPs when there is a faulty transaction. That's why I had to do away with it.What I'd like to know is can ISPs know the credit card numbers when we use it at a site with 128 bit encryption ?

There is a possibility that any information sent over the internet can be read by anyone else on the way. However for your ISP to have software to illegally intrude on your personal information is HIGHLY unlikely. 128 bit encryption is quite reliable (it depends on the algorithm used in each case), so that helps also. I don't think you have much to worry about, if you get hacked then chances are, the person before you and the person after you did also and it would depend on the user at that time and not specifically you.

Your ISP probably already knows everything they want to know about you.

Maybe I'm just too trusting (ha! I know I am), but I figure you have to trust some people. I guess I choose to trust my ISP. Trust them to know where I go and what I do, but keep that information to themselves.

I'm not worrying about the government getting it. I'm not doing anything illegal, unethical or immoral. I tend to stay away from phrases in my email and postings that contain “president” or “White House” and “bomb”.

Any one getting hold of my credit card or bank account numbers is really wasting their time.

You cracked me up with that.I am not worried about the government. They will get so bored if they get the records from my ISP that they will quit their jobs ,lol.Yes,I guess you have to trust some guys.Otherwise who do I turn to when my internet goes crazy.

Yeah,I can understand that most of the information we exchange can be intercepted .Just wasn't sure if my ISP has all my personal information. It's okay.If my ISP is reading this ,I Love my ISP
