Default Speeding up your connection

I've heard it is possible to speed up your cable or dsl connection by tweaking the windows registry. Does anybody know exactly how that is done or where I might find more information?

Either of those should work depending on your OS. Make sure you backup your registry first.

Just a word of caution here. If you know nothing about Window's Registery don't mess with it. Even the most experienced computer tech can make mistakes while in the rigistery.

Yea, but that's why you back up your registry first, in case anything goes wrong. Plus, if you use winxp, there's System Restore. Its saved me a lot.

I ran one of the thigns from the speedguide in the link, and it actually made my connection worse (albeit by a slim amount)

I ran the speed test, before: 1999 kbps
after: ~1300 kbps

Did you run it more than once? Two or three times, for different sources, averaged is a more accurate assessment.

Well I got 2000 KBPS.

Keep in mind that the speed test gives you kiloBITs per second, not kiloBYTEs

Your speed is 545 kbps.
Your speed is 730 kbps.
Your speed is 1424 kbps
Your speed is 811 kbps.
Your speed is 1033 kbps.

Well, all it takes is for one person to point out that I could make a mistake and cause a lot of damage by messing around in Windows Registry when I really don't know anything about it. That's enough to make me come to my senses and leave it alone. My connection is great, I don't really need to improve on it anyway. But thanks for posting the infomation, I'm sure others can use it. And who knows, one of these I might get brave and give it a shot.
