Hey yall. I'm getting a new connection with Comcast, and figured I'd go the self-install route. They gave me this ridiculous software that apparently has tried to install itself along with mcafee and a bunch of other unwanted programs. I scrapped it and want to know why I can't just plug my modem in, make connection, unplug my modem from my computer, plug it into my router and make my router mimmick my MAC like I always used to do. (I haven't had broadband for the last 2 years and this used to work with Comcast.) Is there really some "golden key" that this software installs to allow me access to the internet? I find it ridiculous (I know I already said that) that I can't just use my router to control my connection like in the good old days.

When you attempt to access the Internet with it what is it doing? Are you getting a "Page Not Displayed" message or is it a Comcast page that you can't get past?
In answer to your question there is no real need to install the software unless of course you want all those features which you clearly don't want. |

As far as I know, you need to install that comcast software when you first sign up. Once the accounts activated, you don't need the software anymore. But I could very well be wrong, although things didn't work for me at all until the installation was first completed.
