It depends on your phone company policy, I think. Some dsl providers offer "naked" dsl, meaning that you do not need to have phone service to use dsl. You do need to have a phone line installed at the location where you want dsl. Also, when I was looking into it for myself, it seemed to be more expensive than regular dsl, but I guess if you're not paying a phone bill it evens out in the end.

The company I have both my phone service and DSL with doesn't require you to have phone service with then. They do, however, charge $10.00 more per month for the DSL service if you don't have phone service with them.
You should check with your company to see what their policy is. |

You can have DSL without a phone service. And you can use VOIP with DSL!

Yeah that works, onetime the phones in my area stopped working (dunno why) but the DSL still worked perfectly

This really depends, like with Charter they offer a phone and net package (the phone is VOIP - so for this case, having the net shutoff would shut the phone off yes).
We have a vonage line here, and when the net is down (rare) the phone goes with it. Including my work P8 line, good thing for cell phones as backups.

I have a DSL connection without any phones connected. But I do have a phone number to connect through the telephone company. I have a monthly bill of my phone number (without a physical phone) for only $3 and my monthly bill for the internet is $35.
This is in Thailand though. I don't know in the US if they offer this kind of package. Anyway, my package is 1024/512 kbps and I'm satisfied with it already. |

$3 for a phone number is pretty cheap.I'd have one phone for every room and one for the internet, lol.I have a phone from the company providing the internet connection , but it's not necessary to have a phone from them to get their dsl.

Physical phones are not needed for you to have a DSL connection. But you need a phone number where the telephone company will direct the internet connection. I think it is for business purpose why telephone companies are having a bundle of phone service and DSL in one subscription.

When we moved into our house, we walked around thinking what are we going to do with all of these phone lines and outlets? After we had Dish Networks installed, we were sitting around one night, seeing what new movies we could download and watch - needless to say, you need a working phone line in order to do so, as we were SOL, we gave up and played some playstation.
Oddly, almost 3 years later, the phone outlets are still here, we really should remove them sometime.

Depends on the the company that you are going to subscribe with. Some offer a connection without any phones required, others need you to have their phone bough by you for additional profit I guess. But all the same, you can have DSL with or without a phone.
