My friend has Earthlink DSL and I was considering it, but she installed their software on her computer and has had a lot of problems with it. If I get it, do I have to install their software or is it possible to get a connection without having to load a lot of junk onto my computer?

You'll probably have to install their software to access the dsl box they give you. Most likely won't work without it.

Marlin is right, you have to install their software or you're not going to able to use their service at all. If you want something where you don't have to install the software, you might want to look into cable instead.

Well, I had to install the RR software to get it hooked up. If your provider provides you the modem, most likely you'll have to install something from them.

A lot must hav echanged since you got RR as I didn't have to install the software. All I needed was the driver installed for the modem. |

I have RR too and I don't recall even having to install a driver for the modem. Maybe because we go through a router? I think we had to install something for the router but that's all. Or maybe I'm remembering it wrong because my husband installs everything. LOL

Depends entirely on the service. To the best of my knowledge no cable companies require software installation, but I do know that at one time Yahoo DSL did require it. That was at least 4 years ago though.
