Do you think with a faster internet connection you aremore prone to getting spyware/virii?


I really don't think so, but if you have a dial up connection and you click a 'bad link' you can see it (hopefully) before the page loads and infects your computer, but that all depends on the user.


What are your takes?

Can you REALLY see it before the page loads with dial-up? And does the page have to load entirely for it to infect your computer?

I tend to think there is no difference, and if a person uses a good anti-virus software, they should be fine. As for spyware, I suspect that happens to everyone, slow or fast connection, and the key is to remove it regularly.

I would think that a virus would be the first thing to download from the page. Before any of the graphics or anythings. So I don't think your connection speed really matters. At least I hope I'm not setting myself up for a virus by switching to high speed.

My guess it that Delaney is right, and that by the time you see anything, you aren't going to be able to stop any harm that might have already been done. So I guess I agree with the general consensus, that high speed is just as safe as dial-up in that respect.

I don't know why, but I always assumed that high speed was safer than dial up. Maybe I just have this "faster is better" mentality and I planted that idea in my own mind, who knows. But for some reason I thought that was fact.

Not much to add except to say that you need to install a good antivirus program on your computer to keep you safe from viruses. Don't depend on your connection speed to keep you safe.

And on a side note... phsum0003 do you just make the rounds spamming up forums? I saw your name on another forum today (more spam).

I see, my main reasoning was

say you see a link for i dunno... pets...

and you click it and see like 'playboypets.wz.info/a;sldfjkad)(232', on dialup if you see that in the bar you'd probably close the window before it had a chance to load.

Sometimes if you just mouse over the hyperlink, the actual URL will show down in the lower left corner of the window. For example, if you mouse over the word CALENDAR in the menu bar above, you'll see the url http://forums.broadbandinfo.com/calendar.php down in the lower left. If you mouse over the the word PETS (in your example) and see playboypets.wz.info/a;slkfjkad)(232 you'll know not to click the PETS hyperlink.

It's a good question.I don't think a slower connection would stop the influx of virus just because the page loads slowly ,but I think a faster connection has a disadvantage once the virus gets downloaded to the computer because on a faster connection the virus attempting to send out the data from your pc can do so faster.However, a router can be configured to filter out certain information requests for a webpage.This will block the request from reaching your network.

Well, it's time for my 2 cents...... For the most part, spyware and 'virii' are worries of Windows user's. There are other vulnerable systems but the security is usually a lower priority concern.
