Gig ethernet USB port voodoo

Via Gizmodo:

Belkin must be using some sort of voodoo to be able to crank out 1000Mbps from a USB 2.0 bus that taps out at 480Mbps, but that's what they claim the Gigabit USB 2.0 Network Adapter can do.

Interesting claim to make, wouldn't you say? Reminds me of a tech conversation I saw awhile ago:

Tech: Must be a marketing ploy by dell putting those gig network cards in those computers.
Me: huh? Why?
Tech: I did some testing and I couldn’t get anywhere near a gig thru-put.
Me: How much did you get?
Tech: Around 250Mb.
Me: How much do our dells get with a 100Mb nic?
Tech: Around 85Mb.
Me: Don’t you understand that there is no standard nic speed between 100Mb and 1Gb? I could see if there was a 500Mb nic standard going with a gig might be marketing, but there isn’t. From 100Mb the next step up is 1Gb and you are still getting faster speeds.
Tech: Well they shouldn’t call it a gig if you can’t get close to that speed.
Me: Could it be the other hardware in the pc is the bottleneck, if we would get faster hard drives and controllers you might be able to up your transfer speed?
Tech: True, but I still think it is a marketing ploy.

According to the Belkin Website:

*NOTE: The stated transmission rate-1000Mbps-is the physical data rate. The actual USB 2.0 throughput will be lower than the physical data rate and is dependent upon the PC's USB capacity and other data traffi c on the USB bus. In addition, throughput results will vary depending on the PC hardware and OS used.

Gizmodo didn't even look at their site apparently. That just reeks of class.

I see no need for anything above 10/100 unless you have a lot of network traffic... I mean, how much can you transfer between two PCs to justify buying a gigabit card/router?

My MSI mobo has prebuilt gigabit, but it's worthless... pah, waste of money....

But once people see a USB solution to gigabit networks, they'll flock like sheep to it.

I have about 13 gig of crap I need to back up when I format.

13 gig is 13312 mb (roughly)

13312 mb will take about 221.86 seconds (3 mins) on a 100 mb router (if conditions are right, heh)

If I can't sit and wait for 3 mintues to copy something to another PC, that's just said. No one needs gigabit

The math says 3 mins, but when I backed up my music and movies to reformat (~20 gigs), it took half an hour. You dependent on windows and no network collisions to happen.
