Default Is commercial wi-fi safe?

After reading the various threads here about security, I am wondering if wi-fi like Boingo or one of the others that is available at airports, hotels, and bookstores is safe? What kinds of information should I avoid sending/receiving when using these commercial wi-fi hotspots? What are the dangers of using them?
