Default HDTV without a cable box?

We just got HDTV. Previously we'd only had the cable connected directly to the TV so we've never had a box. Do we have to have the box to get the HDTV signal?

I just found out that you don't need a cable box to get hdtv for the major networks. We bought an antenna at radioshack for $20 and it brings them in crystal clear. Just thought I'd share the info in case anyone was interested.
