I was looking into getting satellite Internet instead of dsl, but my sons were against it. They said, they had heard that satellite was bad for playing online games. Saying satellite had higher pings than dsl or cable. Which results in a few seconds of lag in the game. Which I'm guessing means a lot of death and destruction. For the satellite user, not their opponent.
Were they pulling my leg? |

Wow, I hadn't heard much about that...but it's certainly possible. Personally, I was always under the impression that Satellite was better than Cable overall. But there may be other things that factor in, and not just the connection speeds.

I think it's quite bad because of the unreliability of satellite internet

All the bad reviews I've heard about it would certainly tell me it should not be my first choice for gaming.

Inherient latency puts a hurting on gaming. 2way has to go from your computer to the sat twice, that's a realistic 3 seconds. Hybrid is better with just a single trip but that's still 1.5 seconds to get killed or left by your party.
Satellite isn't a great solution for gamers at all and may never be even if speed up and down was equal to land based. |
