Alternate Voice/Data Provider

I have been searching for an alternate data and voice provider for my home office. I am a software engineer and work from home so great data services are a must. Unfortunately, I live in a rural area in south Georgia and my provider is Windstream. I subscribe to 3MB/1.5MB ADSL from Windstream. Their service is not great, their customer service is even worse and they do not provide enough options. As of yet, I have been unable to locate an alternative provider due to some issues with Windstream not allowing other service providers in the area. I don't understand why this is or if there is any way around it. I guess what I'm asking is, could anyone give me any information or any tips/ideas that might help me acquire services from an alternate provider?
