You also don't want to use it if you have a shoddy net connection in the first place. Some people just get bad service, even on cable, in certain areas. That will drastically effect the quality of your voip.

The only problem I have with VOIP is power outages. Where I live, winter storms have the potential to knock the power out. Since I don't have a cell phone, no power would also mean no phone. A few years ago the power was out for three days. I hate to think of being without a phone for that long.

That's an awesome point that I never even thought of!! The telephone lines are on different than the power, and in certain times could save lives.....

Some people just get bad service

That's me! I use a cellphone for my home phone also. My internet connect is ummm.... unreliable!!! So my phone wouldn't work very well if I have VoIP.

I still have to rely mainly on my celphone for communications. VoIP is really good when talking for a very long time but it does not give you the assurance that it will always be there. Just like what the others have said, without electricity then there is no VoIP also.
